Beaune and the Côte d'Or
The Hospices de Beaune, then the villages of Pommard, Volnay, Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet: an extended day in the Côte d'Or, from Mâcon, Tournus, Chalon-sur-Saône or Lyon.
A Beaune wine tour with your own chauffeur brings you close to the Burgundy of famous wine-list names. North of Chalon-sur-Saône the slope rises, villages follow one another at the foot of the hillside, and every plot, every climat, carries its own name and story. Since 2015 the Climats of the Burgundy vineyards have been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. We set off from Mâcon, Tournus, Chalon or Lyon, and take care of everything else.
The morning often begins in Beaune, at the Hospices. The Hôtel-Dieu was founded there in 1443 by Nicolas Rolin, chancellor to Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, and his wife Guigone de Salins, to care for the poor. You explore it freely with the site's audio guide: the great Hall of the Poor, the glazed tile roofs with their bright patterns, the Last Judgement polyptych by Rogier van der Weyden. Mathis, your chauffeur-host with a passion for local history, tells you what to look out for before you go in, then leaves the visit to you.
The Hospices also own their own wine estate, whose wines are sold at auction every year on the third Sunday of November, for the benefit of the institution. In the afternoon the road heads south through Pommard and Volnay, villages of Pinot Noir, then on to Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet, where Chardonnay gives some of the most sought-after white wines anywhere. Our team books one or two tastings in your name, to suit your tastes and curiosity, and Mathis translates every exchange with the winegrower.
Between stops a surprise is waiting, revealed as the day unfolds: a viewpoint over the vines, an address we love, a small Burgundian gift. Mathis takes a few instant photographs and hands them to you on the spot, to take home alongside your bottles. Cold drinks are on board, your purchases ride in the boot, and you never have to think about the road or the clock.
This is an extended day: about an hour on the road from Mâcon, nearly two from Lyon, made quiet and restful by the electric saloon. Entry fees, tastings and lunch are settled on site, at the public price. Design, bookings, your chauffeur-host, the vehicle and the thoughtful touches are all included in a per-person rate confirmed before anything is booked, on your private page.
Your exact route is composed for you. Some stops may remain a surprise until the day itself.
Extended day, 9 to 10 hours, longer distances. Price per person, taxes included. Minimum 2 guests. Firm quote within 24 hours.
Yes. Allow nearly two hours on the road each way, which is why this is an extended day of 9 to 10 hours. The car is quiet, and the drive is used to tell the story of Burgundy before you arrive.
The per-person rate for an extended day is shown on this page and depends on the number of travellers. You receive a firm quote within 24 hours. Entry to the Hospices, tastings and lunch are settled on site.
The Hôtel-Dieu is visited freely, with the audio guide provided by the site. Your chauffeur-host tells you its story before you go in, then lets you explore at your own pace.
The auction takes place every year on the third Sunday of November, and Beaune is very lively then. We can plan your day that weekend, though we cannot guarantee access to the sale room. Let us know early, as tables in town fill up quickly.
Both have their place. Pommard and Volnay are red wine villages, made from Pinot Noir; Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet are best known for their Chardonnay whites. We choose the tastings to match your preferences.
Yes. If you would rather not do it all in one day, we turn this outing into a stay of two days or more. You book the accommodation of your choice, and we design the rest of the programme.
Tell us the occasion. We imagine the rest.
