In the Middle Ages, Cluny shone across all of Europe: its abbey church was the largest in Christendom before St Peter's in Rome. Twenty-five kilometres away, the abbey of Saint-Philibert in Tournus, remarkably intact, is one of the finest Romanesque buildings in France.
Between the two, a countryside of hills, chapels and hilltop villages, Brancion, Chapaize, Berzé and its frescoes, best discovered by car, with someone who knows where to stop.
